CHINA CLEAN ENERGY
CLEAN POWER PROGRAM

China Clean Energy Clean Power Program

Clean PowerChina is the world's largest coal user and producer. Its coal-based electric power sector—which has been growing approximately 8 percent per year — is the country's single largest source of air pollution, generating half of its sulfur dioxide emissions, 80 percent of its nitrogen oxides emissions, and 26 percent of its carbon dioxide emissions. Current plans to expand China's coal-based energy structure will take a significant toll on the country's public health and environment unless cleaner technologies and policies are widely adopted.

China does have other options. Investing in energy efficiency can dramatically reduce its energy needs, which would put billions of dollars back into the economy. Switching from coal to renewable energy sources such as wind and solar will noticeably decrease pollution and health problems. Finally, there are also clean coal technologies, especially coal gasification-based polygeneration, that will help greatly reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants during power generation.

By collaborating with China's National Development and Reform Commission and its Energy Research Institute, the State Environmental Protection Agency and its China Research Academy of Environmental Science, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the State Electricity Regulatory Commission, the State Grid Corporation DSM Instruction Center, and several provincial and municipal governments, NRDC and SNISD are at the forefront of the efforts to curb the serious pollution problems in China's power sector.
